Traditional golf instruction tells you that when your ball is sitting in light rough, you have what’s called a ‘flyer’ lie. At impact the grass will come between your clubface and ball, producing a shot with little backspin – sort of a knuckleball.

How can you tell if a flyer is lying?

Recognition. Light rough should not cause a flyer lie. If your ball is in full or heavy rough, and is still touching the ground, then you likely have a flyer lie. If the ball is in heavy rough but is held off the ground by the grass, then you have a “fluffy lie,” which must be played differently than a flyer lie.

What causes a flier in golf?

A flier is what happens when moisture or matter (grass/dirt) gets trapped between the clubface and the golf ball at impact, reducing the normal friction or grip between the two. This will often cause the golf ball to slide up the clubface.

What does catch a flyer mean?

US, informal. : to do something that could have either good or bad results : to gamble on something risky He took a flier in politics soon after getting his degree.

What is a hot lie golf?

In this scenario the ball is perched on top of the longer grass and we’re smiling. Be careful though as this is a perfect lie for a flyer. A flyer occurs when the grass does not slow the clubhead down through the hit and just enough of it gets caught between the ball and the face.

How does rough affect ball flight?

The ball flight will be lower and the ball will spin less and roll further (by an unpredictable amount). Longer irons spin the golf ball less from the fairway, so when playing from light rough the effect of reduced spin is less significant overall.

Why do you get flyers out of the rough?

The trouble is, the ball tends to jump out of the short rough—hence the name “flyer lie.” What makes it jump? Grass gets trapped between the clubface and the ball at impact, so the face can’t grip the ball like it normally does. As a result, the shot flies like a knuckle ball and runs hard after it lands.

What lie angle do I need?

If the line is near the middle of the face but slanted toward the toe, then your lie angle is too upright and the toe is up at impact. This is an easy way to check your lie angle at home. Most clubs can be adjusted by a pro shop to match what you need.

What is loft in golf?

Lofts. The loft of a golf club is the angle created between the clubface and the ground – and will be different for every club in your bag. The loft will have a direct impact on the distance the ball travels – the lower the loft, the further the ball will go.

What’s a hanging lie?

Definition of hanging lie : the position of a golf ball which comes to rest on ground sloping downward in the direction it is to be played.

What bounce is best for tight lies?

Low bounce 10 and lower: Ideal for shots from tight lies and firm turf conditions, if you actually keep your ball on the short grass. Less bounce makes it easier for better golfers to get creative with shots such as flop shots around the green because the leading edge is much smaller.

How do you hit a ball from a tight lie?

Four tips for hitting it clean from a tight hardpan lie Move the golf ball back in your stance. This will set your hands in front of the ball. Swing down more on the ball. This will give the golf ball backspin. Keep good tempo. Take more loft. Go to a hybrid instead of a longer iron.

Why can I hit my 3-wood straight but not my driver?

There are many reasons for it, but the most frequent problem is that your clubface is not lined up on the target line and your swing path is from out-to-in. Your driver swing differs vastly from other clubs and you aim to hit the ball on the up. The arc is also much wider, and the swing builds up more speed.

How far should I hit my driver?

Golf Club Distance Chart Club Men Women Driver 200-230-260 150-175-200 3-wood 180-215-235 125-150-180 5-wood 170-195-210 105-135-170 2-iron 170-195-210 105-135-170.

Do wet golf balls make a difference?

Typically when the club is wet it produces slightly less spin and slightly higher shot then when the golf ball and golf club are both dry. We see very minimal differences between the club being wet or dry.

What club should I hit out of the rough?

However, the three most popular choices for hitting out of the rough are the hybrid, a short iron, or a wedge. What is this? When you hit a golf shot out of the rough, you need to ensure that you have enough loft to be able to launch the ball in the air. Thick rough will grab your golf club and shut the face down.

How does wet grass affect golf ball?

Rain makes greens slower than normal as the moisture on the ground and the ball slows it down. In instances of rain over a number of days greenkeepers will likely not be able to mow greens as normal meaning the grass will be longer and even slower. Putts on wet greens also take less break.
